Why the 8-Kilogram Gap Year

People sometimes ask me, “Why eight kilograms?” Why not ten, or twelve, or some other “reasonable” number? The truth is, eight kilograms wasn’t chosen by design, but it isn’t completely random either.

Like most travelers, I started out carrying way too much. I dragged bags across cobblestones, cursed at luggage carousels, and learned the hard way that “just in case” almost always means “never used.” Over time I discovered I was happier, faster, and freer with less.

Eight kilograms turned out to be the sweet spot where travel became lighter in every sense of the word. It also happens to fit under most airline carry-on weight limits, which means you can keep your bag with you and skip the baggage check circus.

But this book didn’t come only from my own trial and error. It also comes from a lot of research and many hours spent in hostel common rooms. Over the course of writing, I interviewed more than 100 gap year travelers: some just setting out with fresh packs and wide eyes, others seasoned veterans on the final stretch of their journeys. Those conversations were equal parts wisdom and comedy: what to pack, what not to pack, and plenty of travel tales that prove the gap year experience is never neat and tidy, but always worth the ride.

My goal was to distill my own travel experiences, along with the collective knowledge of people who have lived the gap year life, into something anyone can use — a guide to help travelers pack lighter, travel smarter, and enjoy the ride more.

This blog is my way of keeping the conversation going. The book gave me the chance to share the essentials. Here I can expand with new discoveries, gear I’m testing, and reflections that didn’t fit neatly between the covers.

So if you’ve ever felt weighed down by travel — literally or figuratively — you’re in the right place.
